Trudy Johns

I’ve learned to create art in various places and ways. I have collected art  materials for a long time. In the beginning it was collecting rocks, of various colors placed on the ground as a geometric design or a blueprint for a house, or piling them up for a sculpture. We played with clay that my mother called Mud. However, we were allowed to play with It. I helped with measuring, sawing, and nailing boards when my brothers were building their tree houses. This list could go on. This is one way of expressing how important the arts are to the community, and to the schools.

Play is as important as all other methods of teaching.

At a later time I started to collect paper and sketchbooks, oil paint, acrylic paint – brushes and palette knives. I use graphite, charcoal, and pastel. I like to create scenes on canvas and to play with watercolor in my sketchbooks.

I came to NKAC to become a member then found myself teaching. I wasn’t expecting that! Life is full of surprises. Also I am learning by teaching.

It is great to be able to learn and do new things all our life.

Schools I’ve studied at include Penn State – New Ken Campus, and Art Institute of New Kensington. I have attended many other art classes, workshops and art clubs. And I was so lucky to have good art teachers everywhere I went.

Good wishes to all, Trudy
